Annunciation, XVII century

“Annunciation” in ivory.
Exceptionally fine, this ivory carved relief representation of the Annunciation arouses not only admiration, but also curiosity for a little-known luxury item. Produced with virtuosity in ivory plaques applied to a wooden background covered with velvet, this relief depicting the Annunciation is articulated in two levels. The front is organized around the image of the Virgin and the Angel Gabriel, lit by rays in gilded silver, in the background, the angels show the scene, and the cherubim are … in the clouds . It is preserved in its original frame, in carved ebony. Ivory carving is a tradition that has continued over the centuries. In the 17th century, there are many production centers, thanks to Holland which imported colonies. The papal court in particular offered ivory objects as diplomatic gifts. It is preserved in its original frame, in carved ebony.
