Female mannequin
Original base
Circa 1920
In 1920 there was a desire to make mannequins less realistic and less rigid. They become more stylized with more abstract features, a streamlined body that embodies the new aesthetic. The absence of distinctive sign and face refers to our own reflection, to our own desires but also to our fears. Store windows and photographers have fun positioning them in ways that puzzle the viewer. They hang them from ceilings or chandeliers or make them take extravagant positions. They become a tool to materialize the fantasies of the mind.
