French mercury mirror, circa 1730

Mercury mirror, gilded wood.

The decor is made up of flowers, roses and acanthus leaves. The mirrors were elements intended to bring light and to contemplate, but also to show the degree of richness and proximity to the master of the place… the closer you approached him, the more they were worked.

Depending on their position in the house, whether or not they reflected the light, whether they announced the arrival in a ceremonial room… the screens were lined with mirrors, or like ours, left empty. This way brings him today contrast and lightness.

Rockery period, circa 1730
