Portrait of a Young Gentleman with a Small Dog – Circle of Pieter Frederik de La Croix (1709–1782)
An elegant 18th-century portrait depicting a young gentleman dressed in a sumptuous coat and matching waistcoat of a brilliant blue hue, richly adorned with broad bands of openwork silver passementerie and numerous intricately crafted spherical buttons. His neck and wrists are delicately embellished with a prominent jabot and cuffs of fine pleated lace, while his hair is powdered and tied back in the fashion of the era.
In the lower-left of the composition, a small spaniel with large, expressive eyes and a red-and-white coat enlivens the scene with a touch of familiar tenderness.
