Saint Sebastian in Carved Wood – 17th Century

Saint Sebastian in Carved Wood – 17th Century

This 17th-century polychrome wood sculpture depicts Saint Sebastian with remarkable grace. His body is portrayed in an expressive, almost dancing pose, with his right arm raised and his left arm extended, creating a dynamic and light silhouette.

Far from the typical depiction of agony, his youthful face remains gentle and serene, without any trace of suffering. He wears a delicate crown of golden flowers atop carefully arranged curly hair. Wrapped in a cloth with golden highlights, the saint displays a reliquary crescent inlaid on his chest, attesting to his sacred status.

A former officer of the Imperial Guard, Saint Sebastian is historically invoked as the great protector against plague and epidemics. He also remains the patron saint of archers and soldiers. The work is striking for the elegance of its pose and the serenity emanating from the martyr’s expression, symbolizing resilience in the face of adversity.
