Oil on canvas “The Child and His Dog” signed lower right by Richard Flatters (1822-1876).

Flatters studied from 1837 to 1840 at the Royal Prussian Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf. There he was a pupil of Karl Ferdinand Sohn. He then began working as a genre and portrait painter. In the early 1840s, he worked as a court painter for the Grand Ducal Court of Oldenburg. From 1843 to 1848, he studied under Paul Delaroche in Paris. From 1845 to 1848, he participated in the Paris Salon. In the 1850s, Flatters worked as a genre and portrait painter in Oldenburg. He settled in Brussels in the early 1860s and lived in Bremerhaven from 1864, where he founded a drawing school for journeymen and apprentices in 1866.
