Folding Table, Napoleon III Period
Antique French folding table dating from the Napoleon III period (1852–1870).
Made of softwood, it is adorned with remarkable lacquered and painted decoration, typical of the Far Eastern taste that characterized this era.
The circular tabletop features a black background finely decorated with gilt motifs. In the center, an Asian-inspired architectural scene is surrounded by a delicate floral garland running along the edge. An ornamental frieze highlights the rim, demonstrating the attention to detail.
The turned central column rests on a curved tripod base, also embellished with gilt motifs. The folding mechanism allowed the table to be easily stored against a wall when not in use. This type of furniture perfectly illustrates the enthusiasm for Japonisme and exotic decor during the Second Empire.
