Majolica Ewer in the Palissy Ware Style
An exceptional collector’s piece attributed to the renowned master ceramist Manuel Mafra in Caldas da Rainha, circa 1880.
Although unsigned, the ewer’s quality of execution and formal style allow for its association with the manufactory’s productions. The object is distinguished by its abundant naturalistic decoration in relief, featuring a large lizard serving as a handle and various insects, reptiles, and amphibians applied to a background imitating moss.
A similar piece is featured as a major reference in Marshall P. Katz’s book, “Portuguese Palissy Ware: A Survey of Ceramics from Caldas da Rainha 1853-1920,” on pages 44 and 57.
