Satsuma Faience Planter, Napoleon III Period

Satsuma Faience Planter, Napoleon III Period

A large jardiniere in the Japonisme style that revolutionized French decorative arts during the Second Empire.

This Satsuma faience bowl, originating from the island of Kyushu in Japan, is distinguished by its ivory glaze and its exquisitely detailed iconography. The polychrome decoration, richly enhanced with gold, depicts birds among flowers.

The piece is enhanced by its gilt bronze mount from the Napoleon III period.

The handles are in the form of herons with outstretched wings and graceful necks. In Eastern symbolism, the heron is a sacred emblem of longevity and serenity, a theme perfectly echoed here in the exquisite craftsmanship of the Satsuma factory. The piece rests on a rocaille base.
