French Bulldog Doorstop, Hubley Manufacturing Co., circa 1910

This original cast iron doorstop depicts a standing French Bulldog, captured in an alert and spirited pose. Produced around 1910 by the prestigious Hubley Manufacturing Company in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1894 by John Hubley, the company became famous for its exceptionally high-quality cast iron toys and household items. The manufacturing process was highly technical: artisans first carved a wooden model to create an impression in fine sand, before pouring molten iron heated to over 1600°C (3,300°F). Each piece was then sent to the decorating department where colorists applied several coats of paint to bring the animal to life, making each Hubley doorstop a true miniature collector’s sculpture.
