Giltwood and Wrought Iron Cage Chandelier – Italy, Late 18th Century
A large, stately cage-style chandelier from late 18th-century Italy. Built around a central shaft of carved, gold-leafed wood retaining its original patina, the chandelier is distinguished by the refinement of its wrought iron structure. Sinuous metal arms with a patinated finish sweep upward in elegant scrolls, creating an airy, highly decorative cage form.
The piece is magnificently adorned with a rich array of crystal drops (Bohemian or Murano)—including large faceted teardrops, stylized blown-crystal pear shapes, and festooned bead garlands that beautifully capture the light.
It features nine light arms, each topped with a scalloped, carved, and gilded wooden drip pan. The central axis is crowned with a delicate red-tinted cabochon—a charming detail characteristic of Italian craftsmanship from this era (Florence or Venice).
