Italian Capipote, 19th century

Capipote in carved and painted wood, glass eyes, amber necklace.
These Virgins were used during processions, or in churches, chapels, and oratories. They could also illustrate passages from the Bible for the often illiterate faithful and make the Holy Scriptures more understandable. They were dressed in varying degrees of luxury depending on the city, village, or individual who owned them.
