Painted canvas “Childhood,” also known as “The Four Ages of Life,” by Nicolas Lancret, late 18th century
Painted canvas depicting a play scene between the parents and children of an aristocratic family in a rich interior of architectural elements probably on a terrace of a castle. The perspective opens on the landscape background and an element of the castle.
Trompe l’oeil frame with garlands of flowers.
Lancret, one of the most celebrated Rococo painters of the early 18th century, produced fêtes galantes and conversation pieces in a style close to that of Jean-Antoine Watteau. Like his English contemporary, Hogarth, Lancret’s reputation was enhanced by popular hand-colored engravings made after his paintings.
Late 18th century.
