Painting by Mattia Traverso “Diana and Her Retinue”
This early 20th-century painting by Mattia Traverso elegantly depicts Diana, the goddess of the hunt, in a mythological scene inspired by 18th-century decor.
The goddess is shown seated on a golden chariot, accompanied by her retinue of nymphs and cherubs. Diana is recognizable by her crescent moon on her forehead and her bow, while a stag, guided by putti, escorts the procession through a forest.
The scene is framed by a particularly rich trompe-l’œil border imitating a sculpted and gilded frame adorned with garlands of fruit, flowers, and decorative medallions.
Mattia Traverso, born in Genoa in 1885 and died in 1956, was a highly talented Italian painter renowned for his exceptional technical mastery and his taste for classical scenes of grand decoration, which allowed him to revive the splendor of past centuries with a modern elegance.
