This painting by Mattia Traverso, dating from the early 20th century, depicts the Virgin and Child in an architectural composition inspired by 18th-century religious tapestries.

The central figure, painted with great delicacy, is framed by a rich trompe-l’œil structure combining columns, gilded sculpted elements, and a purple background with lily motifs. On either side, two large sculpted angels appear to support the whole, lending a majestic depth to the scene.

The entire composition is surrounded by a tempera border adorned with garlands of flowers and ribbons.

Mattia Traverso, born in Genoa in 1885 and died in 1956, was a highly talented Italian painter renowned for his exceptional technical mastery and his taste for grandly decorated classical scenes, which allowed him to revive the splendor of past centuries with a modern elegance.
