Exceptional Pietà on Slate, Genoese School, 17th Century
This piece illustrates the virtuosity of the masters of the Genoese school of the Seicento (17th century) through a representation of the Pietà of rare dramatic intensity. The scene depicts the Virgin Mary supporting the body of Christ in a classic pyramidal composition of the Italian Baroque. The iconography is enriched by the presence of angels collecting the Precious Blood in gilded chalices, a powerful Eucharistic motif characteristic of the religious fervor of the Counter-Reformation.
An exceptional technique: Lavagna slate
The use of slate as a painting support is a prestigious technical signature of the Ligurian region.
