Interior Scene or Still Life, signed R. Lepetit
An elegant and intimate composition depicting a molded white marble mantelpiece. At the center stands a terracotta sculpture of a young woman in profile, her silhouette reflected in the large mirror in the background. Arranged around the bust are a bronze candlestick adorned with crystal pendants and fitted with pleated pink silk lampshades, an antique leather-bound book, two framed miniatures, and a porcelain snuffbox.
The reverse of the work features, on its stretcher, the mark of the famous Parisian house Hardy-Alan. Located at 36, rue du Cherche-Midi in Paris, this establishment was one of the most renowned color merchants and canvas stretchers manufacturers in the capital. Particularly active from the second half of the 19th century until the very beginning of the 20th century, leading painters such as Eugène Carrière regularly sourced their canvases and art supplies there.
