Rare Pair of Miniature Devotional Paintings on Vellum, 18th Century
This delicate pair of 18th-century miniature paintings beautifully illustrates the spirit and fervor of private devotion under the Ancien Régime. Presented in their original, richly carved wooden frames.
The first composition, which can be admired in detail in the image, depicts the Annunciation. In an atmosphere of solemnity, the Virgin Mary is shown draped in an azure blue mantle over a pink dress, her hands raised in acceptance before a four-poster bed with a rich red canopy. Facing her, the Archangel Gabriel bows respectfully, kneeling, holding a stem of white lily, a symbol of purity, while the Holy Spirit descends from heaven in the form of a dove at the center of a radiant glory.
The second miniature develops an equally powerful and highly popular iconographic theme from the 18th century: that of the Christ Child prefiguring his own Passion. The Christ Child, surrounded by a sacred halo, is depicted lying on delicate white drapery beneath a pink curtain drawn back in a drapery. He tenderly cradles a large wooden cross, blending the innocence of childhood with the gravity of his divine destiny.
