Important Louis XIV period mirror with border plates, late 17th century
An exceptional, large Louis XIV ceremonial mirror in finely carved and gilded wood. The rectangular frame features rich ornamentation—including gadrooned friezes, foliage, and geometric motifs—surrounding a central mirror plate framed by smaller border plates.
The centerpiece of this mirror is its remarkable openwork double-arched pediment. It features a central *mascaron* (grotesque mask) crowned with radiating plumage—a solar symbol par excellence of the *Grand Siècle*. This face is flanked by sinuous acanthus scrolls and stylized volutes, and is surmounted by two bird figures.
