“Last Judgement”, 17th century

Oil on canvas depicting an allegory of the Last Judgment, inscription in Latin: “Surgite Mortui”-“He rises from the dead”.

after 1 Corinthians 15:52: “the trumpet will sound, and the dead will rise incorruptible, and we will be changed.”

The First Epistle to the Corinthians evokes the resurrection of the dead. The Apostle Paul awaits this resurrection at the end of time, at the moment of Christ’s return: “At the signal given by the voice of the archangel, and by the divine trumpet, the Lord himself will descend from heaven, and those who died in Christ will rise first.”
The Gospel of Matthew describes the first instance of Jesus’ prediction: «Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near». It introduces the expression of the resurrection of the dead. This type of resurrection refers to the resurrection of the dead, all humanity, at the end of this present age, the general or universal resurrection.
The beneficent souls will rise to life: it is the Kingdom of God that was preached by the Messiah and his apostles, whose Garden of Eden is the best part. Evil souls will be relegated to hell-hell hell.
