Chinese lacquer screen, 19th century

Chinese lacquer screen, 19th century

Double-sided folding screen composed of six lacquered and finely carved panels, inspired by the productions of the Qing dynasty and the Coromandel style.

The front, set against a black lacquered background, is decorated at its centre with a perspectival depiction of a pagoda and its imperial courtyard, within a landscape of flowering plants and trees.

The reverse side is more simplified, as is customary, and features a tree beneath which flowers and birds coexist. The artisanal mastery of this screen is reflected in its ability to maintain perfect visual legibility, regardless of how it is folded or displayed.
