Rare polychrome terracotta snuffbox, late 19th century
This charming painted terracotta snuffbox, suitable for a counter or parlor, depicts a portly and boisterous male figure, firmly rooted in the tradition of satirical and popular figures of the late 19th century.
Depicted standing proudly with his legs apart, he wears an 18th-century-inspired costume: a wide black jacket with buttoned lapels, a bright red waistcoat adorned with a gold star or other decoration at the collar, black breeches, and a tied fabric tie. Wearing a black tricorn hat typical of the Ancien Régime, the figure has strongly expressive and sculpted features, combining bushy eyebrows with rosy cheeks. The removable head serves as a lid, revealing the inner receptacle for snuff.
