Tobacco box, carved wood from the Black Forest, late 19th century
This late 19th-century tobacco box is a remarkable example of Black Forest wood carving. Carved from a single piece of dense wood, the object takes the form of a dog’s head with remarkably lifelike features, reflecting the contemporary taste for animal and satirical sculptures.
The particularly striking gaze is emphasized by the orange-red sulfide eyes, giving the piece an extraordinary presence. The top of the head is adorned with a small hat or flat cap.
